The coil is the heart of your electronic cigarette. Located in the clearomizer and connected to the battery, it heats the liquid to produce vapor.
A good power setting, combined with precise temperature control, is essential to avoid a bad taste or a too-short lifespan of your coils, as well as for an optimal vaping experience.

Understanding the units: Ohm, Watts and Wattage

To vape well, you need to know how to read the information printed on a coil. Its value is expressed in ohm (Ω): the lower the ohm, the higher the required power.
The power is measured in watts (W): this is the energy sent from your box or your mod to the coil.
The wattage directly influences the vapor, the flavor, the hit and the lifespan of the cotton surrounding the wire of the coil.

The modes available on some electronic cigarettes even allow automatic temperature control to prevent burning the cotton. They can be found on the best electronic cigarettes for experts or in some of our category of best electronic cigarettes around 50 euros

The influence of the coil value on your vaping style

  • More than 1.0 ohm: ideal for indirect inhalation (MTL), with a higher nicotine level and a pronounced hit. Use at low power, discreet vapor, longer cotton lifespan.

  • Less than 1.0 ohm (sub-ohm): designed for direct inhalation, with more vapor, more flavor and a kit or product often performance-oriented.

Common mistakes to avoid

A poor power setting can cause:

  • Burnt taste (charred cotton)

  • Liquid leaking from the clearomizer

  • Poor vaping experience

Example: a coil of 1.3 ohm used at 40 watts will burn the cotton immediately. Conversely, a coil of 0.3 ohm at 10 watts will not vaporize enough liquid, causing leaks and loss of flavor.

How to find out your coil value?

Two solutions:

  1. Read on the coil: the value in ohm and the wattage range are often engraved on the metal part (or on the cartridges for electronic cigarettes).

  2. Check the screen of your box or mod: it shows the value and sometimes even the recommended power range.

Setting the power: finding the right range

Each coil has a recommended power range:

  • More than 1.5 ohm: less than 10 watts (MTL, liquid savings and well-dosed nicotine).

  • Between 1.0 and 1.5 ohm: 9 to 15 watts, perfect for beginners.

  • Between 0.5 and 1.0 ohm: 20 to 35 watts (stronger hit, good flavor).

  • Between 0.3 and 0.5 ohm: 20 to 60 watts (dense vapor, use for e-liquids with a low nicotine level).

  • Between 0.15 and 0.3 ohm: 20 to 100 watts, for performance-oriented equipment.

Always start at the bottom of the range and gradually increase the wattage to optimize your flavors and extend the life of the cotton.

Other factors to take into account

For a great vaping experience, remember:

  • Know the ohm value of your coil

  • Respect the power and wattage range

  • Adapt your settings to your experience and your preferred flavors

Whether you choose an entry-level kit, a high-end product, or are looking for a cheap e-liquid, understanding how your coil works is the key to extending the lifespan of your equipment and making the most of your flavors.
