As a vaper, the battery life of your e-cigarette is a crucial point.
If you are at the office with a USB charger within reach, no worries: you can plug in your e-cigarette as soon as it runs low. But what about when you head out for an evening, a festival or a camping trip for 24 hours (or more)?
Between advertised battery life, vaping style and tips for extending the lifespan of your device, let's take stock so your e-cigarette never lets you down mid-cloud.
Battery life is expressed in mAh (milliampere-hours). The higher this number, the longer your e-cigarette can run before needing to be recharged.
On average, today's models range from 200 mAh (ultra-compact) to 5000 mAh (large formats for intensive vapers).
Two types of power supply exist:
Built-in battery: directly integrated into the e-cigarette, it charges via USB-C.
Removable battery: generally in 18650 format at 3000 mAh, to be inserted into the mod and charged separately.
The way you vape plays a huge role in how long your battery lasts.
MTL (indirect inhalation)
With a coil between 1.8 Ω and 0.8 Ω, the draw is tight and requires little power. Result: your battery will last much longer.
DTL (direct inhalation)
Cloud chasers often vape in sub-ohm (coils below 1 Ω), which consumes much more energy. For this style of vaping, you need to plan for significantly greater battery life.
The more you vape, the faster the battery drains.
An occasional vaper can last several days on a small battery, while a regular sub-ohm vaper can drain 3000 mAh in just a few hours.
Here are a few benchmarks to help you make your choice:
Occasional MTL vaper: 200 to 1000 mAh is sufficient.
Regular MTL vaper / in the process of quitting smoking: 1500 to 3000 mAh to avoid running out.
Occasional DTL vaper: minimum 1000 to 1500 mAh to last the evening.
Regular DTL vaper: at least 3000 mAh.
Tip: if you like slim, compact e-cigarettes but their battery life is limited, owning two devices is an excellent solution. You can vary flavors and nicotine levels while always having a vape ready to use.
Removable batteries (18650, 21700, etc.) allow you to carry a charge of 3000 mAh or more in a small secure plastic case.
This is ideal if you don't have access to a USB port during the day.
Advantages: unlimited battery life with spare batteries, easy replacement when worn out.
Disadvantages: higher upfront cost, need for an external charger, careful handling required (always transport in a plastic or silicone case to avoid any contact between the poles).

Lithium batteries support on average 300 charge/discharge cycles before losing performance.
After this threshold: less power, reduced battery life.
The larger your battery is to begin with, the less often you will need to charge it, and the longer it will last.
Your battery life depends as much on its capacity as on your vaping style and frequency of use. Between the advertised battery life and the real-world battery life, you need to learn to match your equipment to your habits. The right choice, a few charging precautions, and you can say goodbye to unexpected power outages… and hello to clouds on demand.
