An e-liquid (or e-cigarette liquid) is the product that generates vapour when heated by an e-cigarette’s coil. Unlike conventional cigarettes, there is no combustion. E-liquid consists of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings and, optionally, nicotine. It determines the flavour, throat sensation, vapour production and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four ingredients:

• propylene glycol (PG), which carries flavourings, strengthens the throat hit and provides a sensation similar to smoking a cigarette;

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who want to replace conventional cigarettes. Nicotine provides a sense of satisfaction and helps reduce cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either towards the end of the quitting process or simply for the enjoyment of vaping, although vaping is not recommended if you do not smoke. Choosing the right nicotine strength is essential to avoid an unpleasant experience, such as irritation or cravings. The strength you need depends on how many cigarettes you used to smoke. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. Too little nicotine can lead to frustration and relapse, while too much can cause throat discomfort. Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that feels smoother to inhale. It is absorbed quickly and gives a less harsh throat hit, even at high strengths. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suitable for new vapers, former heavy smokers and low-powered MTL kits. They come in different strengths. The best-known and most effective is 20 mg/ml, which is particularly suitable for heavy smokers. A strength of 10 mg/ml may also work well for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a bottle of concentrated nicotine designed to be added to a larger bottle of e-liquid. It lets you adjust the final nicotine strength according to how much you add. This flexible, economical option lets you boost a larger bottle of e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster gives you 3 mg/ml; two boosters bring it to 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol to vegetable glycerine ratio has a significant effect on the vaping experience.

• An e-liquid high in propylene glycol, or PG (70/30, 80/20), enhances the throat hit and flavour definition while producing discreet amounts of vapour. The e-liquid is thin and should only be used with tight-draw MTL devices to avoid leaks.
• An e-liquid high in vegetable glycerine, or VG (30/70), produces more vapour and larger clouds, with a smoother, sweeter feel. This thicker e-liquid is suitable for sub-ohm or shisha-style e-cigarettes that produce large clouds of vapour at high power.

Your choice therefore depends on your e-cigarette’s power and compatibility. If in doubt, the most common option is a 50/50 PG/VG ratio. Balanced and versatile, it works with MTL, RDL and lower-powered DTL e-cigarettes (at around 15 to 40 watts).

Plant-based e-liquids and those made with Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by some vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used for MTL vaping at low power (at least 30 watts) to avoid leaks and preserve product quality.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally contain no nicotine. They offer a different experience focused on relaxation, without an addictive effect. Use them at moderate power to preserve their quality, preferably with a tight-draw MTL e-cigarette.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoking tobacco. They are made from ingredients certified as posing no health risks, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances in conventional cigarettes. Despite these precautions, the e-liquid may turn slightly brown. This colour is due to nicotine oxidation and may also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid; it is harmless and the liquid remains suitable for use. The best-before date, known in French as the DLUO or DDM, is a guideline. After this date, an e-liquid may lose some of its flavour and change in appearance (colour and consistency). A newly manufactured e-liquid has a best-before date of around 2 years. Even after that date, it remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
