Choosing the right 100 ml 40/60 PG/VG shortfill e-liquid

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for e-cigarettes. The 100 ml format is sold nicotine-free, generally in a 120 ml bottle designed to hold up to two nicotine boosters. It can be vaped as it is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters. For a higher strength, the mixture should be prepared in a large graduated empty bottle. Slightly richer in vegetable glycerine than a 50/50 blend, it delivers more generous vapour and a smoother throat hit while maintaining excellent flavour rendition, for restricted direct lung (RDL) vaping.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: 100 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. If you want nicotine, the number of boosters added determines the final strength:

Boosters added (10 ml at 20 mg/ml)Final volumeStrength obtainedContainerProfile
None100 ml0 mg/mlOriginal bottleNicotine-free vaping, flavour enjoyment
1 booster110 ml≈ 2 mg/mlOriginal bottleVery low nicotine requirement
2 boosters120 ml≈ 3 mg/mlOriginal bottleOccasional smoker, RDL vaping
3 boosters130 ml≈ 4.5 mg/mlLarge graduated bottleModerate smoker, RDL vaping
4 boosters140 ml≈ 6 mg/mlLarge graduated bottleModerate smoker, MTL or restricted RDL vaping

The strengths obtained are rounded (exactly 1.8, 3.3, 4.6 and 5.7 mg/ml). The original 120 ml bottle holds a maximum of two boosters: from three boosters onwards, the mixture must be transferred to a large bottle. In RDL, nicotine is perceived slightly more strongly than in MTL: two boosters are often sufficient. For a nicotine requirement above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you boost a 100 ml e-liquid?

Up to 3 mg/ml, in the original bottle:

1
Open the bottle: remove the dropper nozzle from the 120 ml bottle (it can generally be unclipped using a fingernail or the supplied nozzle opener).
2
Pour in the booster(s): add one booster for approximately 2 mg/ml, or two boosters for approximately 3 mg/ml.
3
Close and shake: replace the nozzle, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to homogenise the mixture.
4
Leave to rest for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to write the resulting strength on the bottle.

For approximately 4.5 or 6 mg/ml, in a large graduated bottle:

A
Transfer the e-liquid: pour the entire 100 ml into a 250 ml graduated empty bottle.
B
Add the boosters: three boosters for approximately 4.5 mg/ml (130 ml), four boosters for approximately 6 mg/ml (140 ml). The graduations allow you to check the final volume.
C
Close, shake and leave to rest for a few minutes, then write the resulting strength on the bottle.

Which nicotine booster should you choose?

Le Vapoteur Discount boosters come in 10 ml bottles (the dosage is indicated on every product page). The type of nicotine and base changes the throat sensation. With a 40/60 e-liquid, each 50/50 booster raises the PG proportion very slightly: the mix remains close to 42/58.

The 40/60 PG/VG ratio: generous vapour and smoothness

An e-liquid is made up of a base of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG), flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries flavours and throat hit, while VG provides smoothness and vapour volume. With 60% VG, this ratio lies between 50/50 and 30/70: denser vapour than 50/50, a smooth throat sensation and flavours that remain clearly present.

Slightly thicker than 50/50, 40/60 e-liquid is suitable for coils from 0.4 to 1.0 Ω. On a very tight-draw pod (coil above 1.2 Ω), it may saturate the cotton more slowly.

Which equipment for a 40/60 e-liquid?

40/60 performs best with versatile RDL-oriented equipment, capable of properly supplying a 0.4 to 1.0 Ω coil. Here are the most suitable equipment types and a few examples available from Le Vapoteur Discount:

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and wattage determine the draw type. With a 100 ml 40/60 e-liquid, the following guidelines provide stable vaping:

CoilDraw typeIndicative wattage
0.8 to 1.0 ΩMTL to RDL – medium draw15 to 22 W
0.6 to 0.8 ΩRDL – semi-airy draw20 to 30 W
0.4 to 0.6 ΩRDL – more open draw25 to 40 W

Always start at the bottom of the wattage range stated on the coil, then increase gradually. For the drip tip, a 510 tip is suitable for a medium draw; for RDL, an 810 drip tip makes vapour flow easier on clearomisers designed for this format.

Maintaining your e-cigarette

1
Prime every new coil: slightly thicker than 50/50, 40/60 takes longer to saturate the cotton. Put a few drops on the coil, fill the tank, then wait 5 to 10 minutes before first use.
2
Increase wattage gradually on a new coil to prevent dry hits and preserve the cotton.
3
Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases: VG clogs coils slightly faster (on average every 1 to 3 weeks depending on usage). Take the opportunity to clean the tank and drip tip thoroughly.
4
Close the bottle properly after every refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.

Precautions for use and storage

  • If you do not smoke, do not vape.
  • Product prohibited for minors. E-liquid sold without nicotine: once a booster is added, it contains nicotine and is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with cardiovascular disorders or high blood pressure.
  • Handle nicotine boosters with care; in the event of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
  • In the event of an allergy, check for the possible presence of allergens (limonene, linalool, etc.) indicated on the label.
  • Keep your e-liquids closed, in a dry place, protected from light and temperature variations, out of the reach of children and animals.

Remember to recycle: empty bottles should be placed in appropriate collection points.

FAQ

An e-liquid (or liquid for electronic cigarettes) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, the throat hit, cloud production, and the overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four elements:
  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavourings, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerin (VG), responsible for the vapour and the density of the cloud;
  • the flavourings, which give the taste (fruit, mint, classic tobacco, gourmet, ice…);
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are cutting down.
Some formulas also use alternative plant-based bases (Végétol) for a smoother experience.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who wish to replace the traditional cigarette. Nicotine acts on the sensation of satisfaction and limits cravings. E-liquids without nicotine are used either at the end of a cessation programme, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, even though it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a poor experience (throat irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, whilst a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The aim is to find a balance between hit, sensation, and vaping comfort, adjusting gradually as needed. A low dosage of 0, 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine is generally recommended for light smokers or occasional smokers (fewer than 7 cigarettes per day), and a high dosage of 20 mg/ml of nicotine salt for heavy smokers (1 packet of cigarettes or more). However, this dosage can be adjusted depending on your electronic cigarette and your vaping style.

Nicotine salt is a more stable and smoother form of nicotine to inhale. It provides rapid absorption, with a less harsh throat hit, even at high strengths. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suited to beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-wattage MTL kits. There are different nicotine salt strengths. The best known and most effective being 20 mg/ml, which is very suitable for heavy smokers. However, a 10 mg/ml strength can work very well for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a concentrated nicotine bottle, designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level according to the quantity added. Flexible and cost-effective, this solution allows you to boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will transform your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerine ratio strongly influences the vape.
  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances the throat hit, flavour precision and a discreet vape. The e-liquid will be thin and compatible only with MTL devices with a tight draw to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerine or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid will be compatible with sub-ohm or hookah-type e-cigarettes, producing large clouds of vapour at high power.
The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains the 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use on MTL, RDL and light DTL e-cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

E-liquids with a vegetable base or Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by vapers who are sensitive to PG, and provide a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL with a low wattage (minimum 30 watts) to avoid the risk of leaks and to preserve the quality of the product.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally do not contain nicotine. They offer a different sensation, focused on relaxation, without any addictive effect. They should be used at moderate wattage to preserve the quality of the product. A tight-draw MTL e-cigarette is recommended for use with them.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. They are formulated from ingredients certified as safe for health, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes. However, to choose a safe e-liquid, a few precautions should be taken, such as purchasing your e-liquid from a recognised retailer like Le Vapoteur Discount or checking the composition and origin by favouring reputable and regulated brands.

An e-liquid manufactured in France meets strict requirements and European directives regarding traceability, control, and safety. As a guarantee of quality and transparency for the consumer, French and European brands generally have their own laboratory for developing their e-liquid formula and are required to have this formulation studied by an independent laboratory before placing it on the market. All these steps ensure that e-liquids are safe for vapers. These French and European quality standards prohibit undesirable substances and offer a more secure framework for vaping.

To keep your e-liquid for as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, you should keep it in its original bottle and ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, it can happen that the e-liquid takes on a slightly brown tint. Safe and fit for consumption, this colour is due to the oxidation of nicotine and may also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally advised not to keep the same e-liquid for more than 5 days in your clearomiser or pod cartridge if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid coming straight from the factory will have a BBD of around 2 years. Even past the BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
