Choosing the right 100 ml shortfill e-liquid

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for use with an e-cigarette. The 100 ml format is sold nicotine-free, generally in a 120 ml bottle designed to hold up to two nicotine boosters. It can be vaped as it is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters. For a higher strength, the mix should be prepared in a large graduated empty bottle. Its balanced 50/50 PG/VG ratio is suitable for most e-cigarettes, whether MTL or RDL.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: 100 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. If you want nicotine, the number of boosters added determines the final strength:

The strengths obtained are rounded (exactly 1.8, 3.3, 4.6 and 5.7 mg/ml). The original 120 ml bottle can hold a maximum of two boosters: from three onwards, the mix must be transferred to a large bottle. For a nicotine requirement above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you boost a 100 ml e-liquid?

Up to 3 mg/ml, in the original bottle:

Open the bottle: remove the dropper nozzle from the 120 ml bottle (it generally unclips with a fingernail or the supplied nozzle remover).

Pour in the booster(s): add one booster to obtain around 2 mg/ml, or two boosters for around 3 mg/ml.

Close and shake: replace the nozzle, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to blend the mixture evenly.

Leave to stand for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to note the resulting strength on the bottle.

For around 4.5 or 6 mg/ml, in a large graduated bottle:

Transfer the e-liquid: pour all 100 ml into a 250 ml graduated empty bottle.

Add the boosters: three boosters for around 4.5 mg/ml (130 ml), four boosters for around 6 mg/ml (140 ml). The graduations allow you to check the resulting volume.

Close, shake and leave to stand for a few minutes, then note the resulting strength on the bottle.

The 50/50 PG/VG ratio: a versatile balance

An e-liquid is made up of a propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) base, flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries the flavours and throat hit, while VG provides smoothness and vapour volume. In equal parts, the 50/50 ratio combines these two properties.

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and power determine the draw type. With a 100 ml 50/50 e-liquid, vaped from 0 to 6 mg/ml, the following guidelines provide stable vaping:

Always start at the bottom of the power range indicated on the coil, then increase gradually. For the drip tip, a 510 tip is suitable for most uses; an 810 drip tip can be used for RDL with clearomisers designed for this format.

Maintaining your e-cigarette

Prime every new coil: place a few drops of e-liquid onto the cotton, fill the tank and wait 5 to 10 minutes before first use.

Clean regularly the clearomiser or cartridge and drip tip to prevent residue build-up.

Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases (on average every 1 to 3 weeks depending on use), taking the opportunity to clean the tank thoroughly.

Close the bottle tightly after each refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.

Precautions for use and storage

  • If you do not smoke, do not vape.

An e-liquid (or liquid for electronic cigarettes) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, throat hit, cloud production, and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four elements:
  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavourings, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerin (VG), responsible for the vapour and the density of the cloud;
  • the flavourings, which give the taste (fruit, mint, classic tobacco, gourmet, ice…);
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting smoking.
Some formulas also use alternative plant-based bases (Végétol) for a smoother experience.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who wish to replace the traditional cigarette. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and limits cravings. E-liquids without nicotine are used either at the end of a cessation programme, or simply for the pleasure of vaping, although it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a poor experience (throat irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The goal is to find a balance between throat hit, sensation, and vaping comfort, even if it means adjusting gradually. We generally recommend a low dosage of 0, 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine for light smokers or occasional smokers (fewer than 7 cigarettes per day), and a high dosage of 20 mg/ml of nicotine salt for heavy smokers (1 packet of cigarettes or more). However, this dosage can be adjusted depending on your e-cigarette and your vaping style.

Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that is smoother to inhale. It provides rapid absorption, with a less harsh throat hit, even at high concentrations. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suitable for beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-wattage MTL kits. Nicotine salts come in various strengths. The most well-known and effective being 20 mg/ml, which is ideal for heavy smokers. However, a 10 mg/ml strength can be perfectly suitable for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a concentrated nicotine bottle, designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level depending on the quantity added. Flexible and cost-effective, this solution allows you to boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will turn your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerine ratio strongly influences the vape.
  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances the throat hit, flavour accuracy and a discreet vape. The e-liquid will be thin and compatible only with MTL equipment with a tight draw to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerine or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid will be compatible with sub-ohm or hookah-style e-cigarettes, producing large vapour clouds at high wattage.
The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use on MTL, RDL and light DTL e-cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

E-liquids with a vegetable base or with Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL with a low wattage (minimum 30 watts) to avoid the risk of leaks and preserve the quality of the product.

To keep your e-liquid as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, you should keep it in its original bottle and ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, it may happen that the e-liquid takes on a slightly brown tint. Safe and suitable for consumption, this colour is due to the oxidation of the nicotine and may also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally advised not to keep the same e-liquid for more than 5 days in your clearomiser or pod cartridge if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid straight from the factory will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past the BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
