Choosing the right 100 ml 20/80 PG/VG shortfill e-liquid

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for use with an e-cigarette. The 100 ml format is sold nicotine-free, generally in a 120 ml bottle designed to hold up to two boosters. It can be vaped as is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters. For a higher strength, prepare the mix in a large graduated empty bottle. Rich in vegetable glycerine, it is thicker, gentle on the throat and produces dense vapour, for direct or restricted direct inhalation with sub-ohm equipment.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: 100 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. With direct inhalation, nicotine is felt more strongly than with MTL: with a 20/80 e-liquid, lower strengths are preferred.

Boosters added (10 ml at 20 mg/ml) Final volume Strength obtained Container Profile
None 100 ml 0 mg/ml Original bottle Nicotine-free vaping, flavour enjoyment
1 booster 110 ml ≈ 2 mg/ml Original bottle Low nicotine requirement, DL vaping
2 boosters 120 ml ≈ 3 mg/ml Original bottle Occasional smoker, DL vaping
3 boosters 130 ml ≈ 4.5 mg/ml Large graduated bottle Moderate smoker, RDL vaping
4 boosters 140 ml ≈ 6 mg/ml Large graduated bottle Moderate smoker, RDL vaping

The strengths obtained are rounded (exactly 1.8, 3.3, 4.6 and 5.7 mg/ml). The original 120 ml bottle holds a maximum of two boosters: from three boosters onwards, the mixture must be transferred to a larger bottle. When vaping DL with coils below 0.4 Ω, a strength above 3 mg/ml quickly becomes irritating: two boosters are generally sufficient. For nicotine requirements above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you add boosters to a 100 ml e-liquid?

Up to 3 mg/ml, in the original bottle:

1
Open the bottle: remove the dropper tip from the 120 ml bottle (it can generally be unclipped with a fingernail or the supplied tip opener).
2
Add the booster(s): add one booster for approximately 2 mg/ml, or two boosters for approximately 3 mg/ml.
3
Close and shake: replace the tip, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to thoroughly mix the liquid.
4
Leave to rest for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to write the resulting strength on the bottle.

For around 4.5 or 6 mg/ml, in a large graduated bottle:

A
Transfer the e-liquid: pour all 100 ml into a 250 ml graduated empty bottle.
B
Add the boosters: three boosters for approximately 4.5 mg/ml (130 ml), four boosters for approximately 6 mg/ml (140 ml). The graduations allow you to check the final volume.
C
Close, shake and leave to rest for a few minutes, then write the resulting strength on the bottle.

Which nicotine shot should you choose?

Le Vapoteur Discount boosters come in 10 ml bottles (strength indicated on each product page). The type of nicotine and base alter the throat sensation. With a 20/80 e-liquid, a 50/50 or nicotine salt booster preserves its smoothness; with 50/50 boosters, the mixture remains close to 35/65.

Booster Sensation Who is it for?
50/50 nicotine booster Classic throat hit, neutral flavour The standard choice, compatible with all ratios
70/30 nicotine booster Stronger throat hit, enhanced flavours MTL vaping, for those seeking a sensation close to a cigarette
Cool 50/50 nicotine booster Classic throat hit with a touch of freshness Fans of fresh fruity or menthol flavours
Nicotine salt booster Very smooth throat hit Vapers sensitive to throat hit or looking for smoothness
Cool nicotine salt booster Smooth and cool throat hit The smoothness of salts with a cool note
Hybrid nicotine booster Balance between throat hit and smoothness A compromise between classic nicotine and nicotine salts

The 20/80 PG/VG ratio: dense vapour and smooth on the throat

An e-liquid is made up of a propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) base, flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries the flavours and throat hit, while VG adds smoothness and vapour volume. With 80 % VG, this ratio favours dense vapour and a gentle throat sensation.

Suitable equipment Pods, MTL clearomisers Pods, kits, MTL and RDL clearomisers Box mods, sub-ohm clearomisers (DL)

As it is more viscous, a 20/80 e-liquid requires coils with large liquid inlets. In a pod or MTL clearomiser, it does not saturate the cotton properly and may cause dry hits (a burnt taste).

What equipment should you use for a 20/80 e-liquid?

20/80 performs at its best with sub-ohm equipment, capable of delivering power and supplying the coil correctly. Here are the most suitable equipment categories and a few examples available from Le Vapoteur Discount:

Equipment Key points Examples
Box mod Powerful battery-powered kits fitted with a sub-ohm clearomiser. Kit Aegis Legend 5 – GeekVape

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and wattage determine the type of draw. With a 20/80 e-liquid, higher wattage is required to vaporise the VG effectively:

Coil resistance Type of draw Recommended wattage Suitable nicotine strength
0.4 to 0.6 Ω RDL – restricted direct draw 25 to 40 W 3 to 6 mg/ml
0.2 to 0.4 Ω DL – direct draw 40 to 70 W 0 to 3 mg/ml
0.15 to 0.2 Ω DL – very airy draw 60 to 90 W 0 to 3 mg/ml

Always follow the wattage range indicated on the coil and start at the lower end of this range. For the drip tip, a wide 810 mouthpiece makes direct inhalation easier and allows a high volume of vapour through.

How to maintain your e-cigarette

1
Prime every new coil: as it is thicker, 25/75 e-liquid takes longer to saturate the cotton. Place a few drops on the coil, fill the tank, then wait 10 minutes before first use.
2
Increase the wattage gradually on a new coil to prevent dry hits and protect the cotton.
3
Replace the coil as soon as the flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases: VG clogs coils more quickly (on average, every 1 to 2 weeks depending on use). Take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the tank and drip tip.
4
Close the bottle securely after each refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.

Usage and storage precautions

  • If you do not smoke, do not vape.
  • Product prohibited for minors. E-liquid sold without nicotine: once a booster is added, it contains nicotine and is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with cardiovascular disorders or high blood pressure.
  • Handle nicotine boosters with care; in case of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
  • In case of allergy, check for the possible presence of allergens (limonene, linalool, etc.) listed on the label.
  • Keep your e-liquids closed, in a dry place, away from light and temperature fluctuations, out of reach of children and animals.

Remember to recycle: empty bottles should be taken to suitable collection points.

FAQ

An e-liquid (or liquid for electronic cigarettes) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, throat hit, cloud production, and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four ingredients:

  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavours, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerine (VG), responsible for the vapour and the density of the cloud;
  • flavourings, which provide the taste (fruit, mint, classic blonde, dessert, ice…);
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting smoking.

Some formulas also use alternative vegetable bases (Végétol) for a smoother experience.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who wish to replace traditional cigarettes. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and limits cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either at the end of the quitting process, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, although it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a poor experience (throat irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The aim is to find a balance between throat hit, sensation and vaping comfort, adjusting gradually as needed. We generally recommend a low dosage of 0, 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine for light smokers or occasional smokers (fewer than 7 cigarettes per day), and a high dosage of 20 mg/ml of nicotine salt for heavy smokers (1 packet of cigarettes or more). However, this dosage can be adjusted depending on your e-cigarette and your vaping style.

Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that is smoother to inhale. It provides rapid absorption with a less harsh throat hit, even at high levels. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suited to beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-power MTL kits. There are various nicotine salt dosages available. The best-known and most effective is 20 mg/ml, which is very well suited to heavy smokers. However, a dosage of 10 mg/ml may be perfectly suitable for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a concentrated nicotine bottle, designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level depending on the quantity added. Flexible and cost-effective, this solution lets you boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will turn your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerin ratio strongly influences the vape.

  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances the hit, the precision of the flavours and a discreet vape. The e-liquid will be fluid and compatible only with MTL devices with a tight draw to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerin or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and cloud, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid is compatible with sub-ohm or shisha-type electronic cigarettes, producing large clouds of vapour at high power.

The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your electronic cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use with MTL, RDL and light DTL electronic cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

E-liquids with a vegetable base or with Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by certain vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL with a low wattage (minimum 30 watts) to avoid the risk of leaks and preserve the quality of the product.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally do not contain nicotine. They offer a different sensation, focused on relaxation, without any addictive effect. They should be used at a moderate wattage to preserve the quality of the product. A tight draw MTL e-cigarette is recommended for use with them.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. They are formulated from ingredients certified as safe for health, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes. Nevertheless, to choose a safe e-liquid, a few precautions should be taken, such as purchasing your e-liquid from a recognised retailer like Le Vapoteur Discount, or checking the composition and origin by favouring reputable and regulated brands.

An e-liquid manufactured in France meets strict requirements and European directives regarding traceability, control, and safety. As a guarantee of quality and transparency for the consumer, French and European brands generally have their own laboratory for developing their e-liquid formula and are required to have this formulation tested by an independent laboratory before placing it on the market. All these steps ensure that e-liquids are safe for vapers. These French and European quality standards prohibit undesirable substances and provide a more secure framework for vaping.

To keep your e-liquid for as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, you should store it in its original bottle and ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, the e-liquid may take on a slightly brown tint. Safe and suitable for consumption, this colour is due to the oxidation of nicotine and can also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally advised not to keep the same e-liquid for more than 5 days in your clearomiser or pod cartridge if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). A factory-fresh e-liquid will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past the BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaporisation and will not be harmful to health.
