Choosing the right 50 ml 40/60 PG/VG shortfill e-liquid

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for use with an electronic cigarette. The 50 ml format is sold nicotine-free, in a bottle designed to hold up to two boosters. It can be vaped as is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters. Slightly higher in vegetable glycerine than a 50/50, it delivers more generous vapour and a smoother throat hit, while retaining good flavour reproduction, for restricted direct-to-lung (RDL) vaping.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: 50 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. If you want nicotine, the number of boosters added determines the final strength:

Boosters added (10 ml at 20 mg/ml)Final volumeStrength obtainedProfile
None50 ml0 mg/mlNicotine-free vaping, flavour enjoyment
1 booster60 ml≈ 3 mg/mlOccasional smoker, RDL vaping
2 boosters70 ml≈ 6 mg/mlModerate smoker, RDL vaping

The resulting strengths are rounded (exactly 3.3 and 5.7 mg/ml). With RDL vaping, nicotine is felt slightly more strongly than with MTL: one booster is often enough. For a nicotine requirement above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you boost a 50 ml e-liquid?

1
Open the bottle: remove the dropper tip from the 50 ml bottle (it generally clips off with a fingernail or the supplied tip remover).
2
Pour in the booster or boosters: add one booster for approximately 3 mg/ml, or two boosters for approximately 6 mg/ml.
3
Close and shake: replace the tip, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to homogenise the mixture.
4
Leave to rest for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to note the resulting strength on the bottle.

For a higher strength or a customised recipe, use a larger empty bottle, available in the DIY accessories section.

Which nicotine booster should you choose?

Le Vapoteur Discount boosters come in 10 ml bottles (strength shown on each product page). The nicotine type and base alter the throat sensation. With a 40/60 e-liquid, each 50/50 booster increases the PG proportion very slightly: the mix remains close to 42/58.

The 40/60 PG/VG ratio: generous vapour and smoothness

An e-liquid consists of a propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) base, flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries the flavours and throat hit, while VG provides smoothness and vapour volume. With 60% VG, this ratio sits between 50/50 and 30/70: denser vapour than 50/50, a smooth throat sensation and flavours that remain clearly present.

Slightly thicker than 50/50, a 40/60 e-liquid is suitable for coils from 0.4 to 1.0 Ω. In a very tight-draw pod (coil above 1.2 Ω), it may saturate the cotton more slowly.

What equipment should you use with a 40/60 e-liquid?

40/60 performs best on versatile RDL-oriented equipment that can feed a 0.4 to 1.0 Ω coil correctly. Here are the most suitable equipment categories and a few examples available from Le Vapoteur Discount:

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and power determine the draw type. With a 50 ml 40/60 e-liquid, the following guidelines provide stable vaping:

CoilDraw typeSuggested power
0.8 to 1.0 ΩMTL to RDL – intermediate draw15 to 22 W
0.6 to 0.8 ΩRDL – semi-airy draw20 to 30 W
0.4 to 0.6 ΩRDL – more open draw25 to 40 W

Always start at the bottom of the power range indicated on the coil, then increase gradually. For the drip tip, a 510 tip is suitable for an intermediate draw; for RDL, an 810 drip tip makes vapour flow easier through clearomisers designed for this format.

Maintaining your electronic cigarette

1
Prime every new coil: slightly thicker than 50/50, 40/60 takes longer to saturate the cotton. Place a few drops on the coil, fill the tank and wait 5 to 10 minutes before first use.
2
Increase the power gradually on a new coil to prevent dry hits and preserve the cotton.
3
Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases: VG clogs coils a little faster (on average every 1 to 3 weeks depending on use). Take the opportunity to clean the tank and drip tip thoroughly.
4
Close the bottle securely after each refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.

Precautions for use and storage

  • If you do not smoke, do not vape.
  • Product prohibited for minors. E-liquid sold without nicotine: once a booster is added, it contains nicotine and is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or people with cardiovascular disorders or hypertension.
  • Handle nicotine boosters with care; in case of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
  • In case of allergies, check for the possible presence of allergens (limonene, linalool, etc.) shown on the label.
  • Store your e-liquids closed, in a dry place away from light and temperature variations, out of the reach of children and animals.

Remember to recycle: empty bottles should be taken to suitable collection points.

FAQ

An e-liquid (or liquid for electronic cigarette) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, the throat hit, the cloud production, and the overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four elements:
  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavours, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerin (VG), responsible for the vapour and the density of the cloud;
  • flavourings, which provide the taste (fruit, mint, classic blonde, dessert, ice…);
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting smoking.
Some formulas also use alternative plant-based bases (Végétol) for extra smoothness.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who wish to replace traditional cigarettes. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and limits cravings. E-liquids without nicotine are used either at the end of a quitting process, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, even though it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a bad experience (throat irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The goal is to find a balance between hit, sensation, and vaping comfort, adjusting gradually as needed. We generally recommend a low dosage of 0, 3, or 6 mg/ml of nicotine for light smokers or occasional smokers (fewer than 7 cigarettes per day), and a high dosage of 20 mg/ml nicotine salt for heavy smokers (1 packet of cigarettes or more). However, this dosage can be adjusted depending on your e-cigarette and your vaping style.

Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that is smoother to inhale. It provides rapid absorption, with a less harsh throat hit, even at high strengths. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suited to beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-wattage MTL kits. There are various nicotine salt strengths available. The best-known and most effective is 20 mg/ml, which is very well suited to heavy smokers. However, a 10 mg/ml strength can work very well for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a concentrated nicotine bottle, designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level according to the quantity added. Flexible and economical, this solution allows you to boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will transform your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerin ratio strongly influences the vape.
  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances the throat hit, flavour precision and a discreet vape. The e-liquid will be fluid and compatible only with MTL equipment with a tight draw to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerin or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and clouds, with a softer, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid will be compatible with sub-ohm or shisha-type e-cigarettes, producing large clouds of vapour at high power.
The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use on MTL, RDL and light DTL e-cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

E-liquids with a vegetable base or Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by some vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL with a low wattage (30 watts minimum) to avoid the risk of leaking and to preserve the quality of the product.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally do not contain nicotine. They offer a different sensation, focused on relaxation, without any addictive effect. They should be used at moderate wattage to preserve the quality of the product. A tight-draw MTL electronic cigarette is recommended for use with them.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. They are formulated from ingredients certified as safe for health, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes. Nevertheless, to choose a safe e-liquid, a few precautions should be taken, such as buying your e-liquid from a recognised retailer like Le Vapoteur Discount or checking the composition and origin by favouring reputable and regulated brands.

An e-liquid manufactured in France meets strict requirements and European directives regarding traceability, control, and safety. As a guarantee of quality and transparency for the consumer, French and European brands generally have their own laboratory for developing their e-liquid formula and are required to have this formulation assessed by an independent laboratory before placing it on the market. All these steps ensure that e-liquids are safe for vapers. These French and European quality standards prohibit undesirable substances and provide a more secure framework for vaping.

To keep your e-liquid as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, it should be kept in its original bottle and ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, it can happen that the e-liquid takes on a slightly brown tint. Safe and suitable for consumption, this colour is due to the oxidation of nicotine and can also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally advised not to keep the same e-liquid for more than 5 days in your clearomiser or pod cartridge if you are not using it, to avoid leaks as well as excessive oxidation.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid fresh from the factory will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past the BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be dangerous to health.
