How long does an e-cigarette coil last? How to choose, replace and extend its lifespan?
The coil in your e-cigarette is a bit like the engine of your vape. Without it, no vapour, no flavour, and no enjoyment. But like any engine, it wears out over time and eventually needs to be replaced.
So, how long does an e-cigarette coil last? Let's look together at how it works, why it wears out, and most importantly how to extend its lifespan.
The e-cigarette coil (or coil) is a small heating element located in your clearomizer or cartridge. It is generally made up of a resistive wire wound around a cotton wick soaked in e-liquid.
Its role is simple:
In summary, the coil is the heart of vapour and flavour production in your e-cigarette.
With each puff, the resistive wire heats up then cools down, and the cotton absorbs then releases the e-liquid. This repeated cycle causes:
Unlike a filter or a mechanical part, a coil cannot really be cleaned. Even if some vapers try rinsing the cotton or "burning" off the residue, the cotton remains degraded and the flavour never returns to its optimal level.
On average, the lifespan of a coil is between 10 days and 4 weeks. But this range varies depending on several factors.
Each coil is designed to work within a recommended power range (e.g. 12 to 18 W).
To make it last longer, aim for the lower end of this range.
Most vapers change their coil every 2 to 3 weeks.
The signs that it is time to change the e-cigarette coil:
Tip: Take the opportunity when changing your coil to thoroughly clean your clearomizer. A simple rinse with lukewarm water is enough, followed by complete drying before reassembly.
How to choose the right coil?
To choose the ideal e-cigarette coil for you, take into account:
Your e-cigarette model (each clearomizer has its compatible coils).
The ohm value (Ω):
> 1 ohm: indirect vaping (MTL), tight draw, low power.
< 1 ohm: direct lung vaping (DL), large clouds, higher power.
The type of e-liquid used:
50/50 PG/VG for most standard coils.
Thicker liquids (VG ≥ 70%) for sub-ohm coils.
The coil is an essential consumable part of your e-cigarette. Its lifespan ranges from 10 days to 4 weeks depending on your vaping style, the e-liquid, the power level and maintenance. Regular replacement and a good choice of model guarantee a vape that is always pleasant, flavourful… and free of burnt taste!
