What is a coil and what does it do?

The e-cigarette coil (or coil) is a small heating element located in your clearomizer or cartridge. It is generally made up of a resistive wire wound around a cotton wick soaked in e-liquid.
Its role is simple:

1. Heating the e-liquid when you press the button or inhale.
2. Converting it into vapour that you inhale.

In summary, the coil is the heart of vapour and flavour production in your e-cigarette.

Why does a coil wear out?

With each puff, the resistive wire heats up then cools down, and the cotton absorbs then releases the e-liquid. This repeated cycle causes:

• Cotton clogging caused by the flavourings and sugars found in certain e-liquids.
• Oxidation of the resistive wire over time and with heat.
• A change in taste (the notorious burnt taste or "dry hit").

Unlike a filter or a mechanical part, a coil cannot really be cleaned. Even if some vapers try rinsing the cotton or "burning" off the residue, the cotton remains degraded and the flavour never returns to its optimal level.

  • > 1 ohm: indirect vaping (MTL), tight draw, low power.

  • < 1 ohm: direct lung vaping (DL), large clouds, higher power.

  • 50/50 PG/VG for most standard coils.

  • Thicker liquids (VG ≥ 70%) for sub-ohm coils.
