The 60/40 PG/VG ratio: versatility and flavour

An e-liquid consists of a base of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG), flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries flavour and throat hit, while VG adds smoothness and vapour volume. With 60% PG, this ratio sits between the versatile 50/50 blend and the MTL-oriented 70/30 blend: precise flavours, a pronounced hit and slightly more vapour than 70/30.

Fairly fluid, a 60/40 e-liquid is suitable for coils from 0.6 to 1.2 Ω. On very airy sub-ohm equipment, it may leak and produce an overly pronounced throat hit.

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and power determine the type of draw. With a 60/40 e-liquid, moderate power is sufficient to release the flavours:

Always start at the bottom of the power range stated on the coil, then increase gradually without exceeding 25 W. For the drip tip, a 510 mouthpiece is suitable for most uses and concentrates flavours.

Looking after your e-cigarette

Prime every new coil: apply a few drops of e-liquid to the cotton, fill the tank, then wait a few minutes before first use.

Clean the clearomiser or cartridge and drip tip regularly to prevent residue build-up.

Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases (on average every 2 to 3 weeks depending on use), and take the opportunity to clean the tank completely.

An e-liquid (or electronic cigarette liquid) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is made up of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, throat hit, cloud production, and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four elements:
  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavourings, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerine (VG), responsible for the vapour and cloud density;
  • flavourings, which provide the taste (fruit, mint, classic tobacco, dessert, ice…);
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting.
Some formulas also use alternative plant-based bases (Végétol) for a smoother experience.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who want to replace traditional cigarettes. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and limits cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either at the end of a quitting process, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, although it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a bad experience (throat irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that is smoother to inhale. It provides rapid absorption, with a less harsh throat hit, even at high levels. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suited to beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-wattage MTL kits. There are different nicotine salt dosages. The best known and most effective is 20 mg/ml, which is very suitable for heavy smokers. However, a 10 mg/ml dosage can work very well for regular or occasional smokers.

A nicotine booster is a nicotine-concentrated bottle designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level depending on the quantity added. Flexible and cost-effective, this solution lets you boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will transform your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerine ratio strongly influences the vape.
  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances the throat hit, flavour accuracy and a discreet vape. The e-liquid will be fluid and compatible only with MTL equipment with a tight draw to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerine or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid will be compatible with sub-ohm or shisha-type e-cigarettes, producing large clouds of vapour at high wattage.
The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use on MTL, RDL and light DTL e-cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

E-liquids with a vegetable base or Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL with a low wattage (minimum 30 watts) to avoid the risk of leaks and preserve the quality of the product.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid fresh from the factory will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past its BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
