Choosing the right 50 ml 40/60 PG/VG shortfill e-liquid

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for an electronic cigarette. The 50 ml format is sold nicotine-free, in a bottle designed to hold up to two boosters. It can be vaped as is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters. Slightly higher in vegetable glycerine than a 50/50 e-liquid, it produces more generous vapour and a smoother throat hit, while retaining good flavour delivery, for restricted direct-lung (RDL) vaping.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: the 50 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. If you want nicotine, the number of boosters added determines the final strength:

Boosters added (10 ml at 20 mg/ml)Final volumeStrength obtainedProfile
None50 ml0 mg/mlNicotine-free vaping, flavour enjoyment
1 booster60 ml≈ 3 mg/mlOccasional smoker, RDL vaping
2 boosters70 ml≈ 6 mg/mlModerate smoker, RDL vaping

The resulting strengths are rounded (3.3 and 5.7 mg/ml exactly). With RDL, nicotine is felt slightly more strongly than with MTL: one booster is often enough. For nicotine needs above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you boost a 50 ml e-liquid?

1
Open the bottle: remove the dropper tip from the 50 ml bottle (it can usually be prised off with a fingernail or the tip remover supplied).
2
Add the nicotine shot(s): add one nicotine shot for around 3 mg/ml, or two nicotine shots for around 6 mg/ml.
3
Close and shake: replace the tip, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to blend the mixture evenly.
4
Leave to rest for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to note the resulting strength on the bottle.

For a higher strength or a personalised recipe, use a larger empty bottle, available in the DIY accessories section.

Which nicotine shot should you choose?

Le Vapoteur Discount boosters come in 10 ml bottles (strength indicated on each product page). The type of nicotine and base affect the throat sensation. With a 40/60 e-liquid, each 50/50 booster increases the PG proportion very slightly: the blend remains close to 42/58.

The 40/60 PG/VG ratio: generous vapour and smoothness

An e-liquid is made up of a base of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG), flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries the flavours and throat hit, while VG provides smoothness and vapour volume. With 60% VG, this ratio sits between 50/50 and 30/70: denser vapour than a 50/50 blend, a smooth throat sensation and flavours that remain well defined.

Slightly thicker than a 50/50 blend, a 40/60 e-liquid is suitable for coils from 0.4 to 1.0 Ω. In a pod with a very tight draw (coil above 1.2 Ω), it may saturate the cotton more slowly.

What equipment should you use for a 40/60 e-liquid?

40/60 performs best with versatile RDL-oriented equipment, capable of properly supplying a 0.4 to 1.0 Ω coil. Here are the most suitable equipment categories and a few examples available from Le Vapoteur Discount:

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and power determine the type of draw. With a 50 ml 40/60 e-liquid, the following guidelines provide a consistent vape:

Coil resistanceType of drawRecommended power
0.8 to 1.0 ΩMTL to RDL – intermediate draw15 to 22 W
0.6 to 0.8 ΩRDL – semi-airy draw20 to 30 W
0.4 to 0.6 ΩRDL – more open draw25 to 40 W

Always start at the bottom of the power range indicated on the coil, then increase gradually. For the drip tip, a 510 tip is suitable for an intermediate draw; for RDL, an 810 drip tip makes vapour flow easier on clearomisers designed for this format.

How to maintain your e-cigarette

1
Prime every new coil: being slightly thicker than a 50/50 blend, 40/60 takes longer to saturate the cotton. Add a few drops to the coil, fill the tank, then wait 5 to 10 minutes before first use.
2
Increase the power gradually with a new coil to avoid dry hits and preserve the cotton.
3
Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases: VG clogs coils slightly faster (on average every 1 to 3 weeks depending on use). Take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the tank and drip tip.
4
Close the bottle tightly after each refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.

Usage and storage precautions

  • If you do not smoke, do not vape.
  • Product prohibited for minors. E-liquid sold without nicotine: once a booster has been added, it contains nicotine and is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or people suffering from cardiovascular disorders or high blood pressure.
  • Handle nicotine boosters with care; in case of contact with skin, rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
  • In case of allergy, check for any allergens (limonene, linalool, etc.) listed on the label.
  • Keep your e-liquids closed, in a dry place, away from light and temperature fluctuations, out of reach of children and animals.

Remember to recycle: empty bottles should be taken to suitable collection points.

FAQ

An e-liquid (or liquid for electronic cigarettes) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, throat hit, cloud production, and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four elements:

  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavours, enhances the throat hit, and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerine (VG), responsible for the vapour and cloud density;
  • flavourings, which provide the taste (fruit, mint, classic tobacco, dessert, ice, etc.);
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting smoking.

Some formulas also use alternative vegetable bases (Végétol) for extra smoothness.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who wish to replace the traditional cigarette. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and reduces cravings. E-liquids without nicotine are used either at the end of a quit programme, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, although it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a poor experience (irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The goal is to find a balance between hit, sensation, and vaping comfort, adjusting gradually as needed. A low dosage of 0, 3, or 6 mg/ml of nicotine is generally recommended for light smokers or occasional smokers (fewer than 7 cigarettes per day), and a high dosage of 20 mg/ml of nicotine salt for heavy smokers (1 packet of cigarettes or more). However, this dosage can be adjusted depending on your electronic cigarette and your vaping style.

Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that is gentler to inhale. It provides rapid absorption, with a less harsh throat hit, even at high levels. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suited to beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-wattage MTL kits. Various nicotine salt dosages are available. The most well-known and effective is 20 mg/ml, which is very suitable for heavy smokers. However, a dosage of 10 mg/ml may be perfectly adequate for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a nicotine-concentrated bottle designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level depending on the quantity added. Flexible and economical, this solution lets you boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will bring your e-liquid to 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerin ratio strongly influences the vaping experience.

  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances throat hit, flavour accuracy and discreet vaping. The e-liquid will be fluid and compatible only with MTL equipment with a tight draw, to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerin or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid will be compatible with sub-ohm or shisha-type e-cigarettes, producing large vapour clouds at high power.

The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use on MTL, RDL and light DTL e-cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

Vegetable-base or Végétol e-liquids replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL mode at a low wattage (minimum 30 watts) to prevent leaks and preserve the quality of the product.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally do not contain nicotine. They offer a different sensation, focused on relaxation, with no addictive effect. They should be used at a moderate wattage to preserve the quality of the product. We recommend using them with an MTL electronic cigarette with a tight draw.

E-liquids are considered a far healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. They are formulated from ingredients certified as safe for health, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes. Nevertheless, to choose a safe e-liquid, a few precautions should be taken, such as purchasing your e-liquid from a recognised retailer like Le Vapoteur Discount, or checking the composition and origin by favouring reputable and regulated brands.

An e-liquid manufactured in France meets strict requirements and European directives regarding traceability, quality control, and safety. As a guarantee of quality and transparency for the consumer, French and European brands generally have their own laboratory for developing their e-liquid formula and are required to have that formulation assessed by an independent laboratory before it goes to market. These steps ensure that e-liquids are safe for vapers. These French and European quality standards prohibit undesirable substances and provide a more secure framework for vaping.

To keep your e-liquid as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, you should store it in its original bottle, ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, the e-liquid may take on a slightly brown tint. Safe and fit for consumption, this colour is due to the oxidation of nicotine and may also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally advised not to keep the same e-liquid for more than 5 days in your clearomiser or pod cartridge if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid fresh from the factory will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past the BBD, the e-liquid remains safe to vaporise and will not be harmful to health.
