Choosing the right nicotine salt e-liquid
An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for electronic cigarettes. Nicotine salt e-liquids contain nicotine combined with an organic acid, which lowers its pH. At the same strength, the throat hit is considerably smoother than with traditional nicotine, known as “freebase”: salts therefore allow you to vape high strengths comfortably, from 10 to 20 mg/ml, using tight-draw devices.

Nicotine salts or traditional nicotine: what are the differences?
The two forms of nicotine mainly differ in terms of throat sensation and the devices they are intended for:
| Traditional nicotine (freebase) | Nicotine salts | |
|---|---|---|
| Throat sensation | Throat hit increases significantly with strength | Smooth throat hit, even at 20 mg/ml |
| Common strengths | Usually 0 to 12 mg/ml | 10 and 20 mg/ml |
| Suitable devices | From MTL to sub-ohm depending on the PG/VG ratio | Low-power pods and MTL kits |
| Power | From 10 to over 40 W depending on the coil | Around 8 to 20 W |
Nicotine salts are not suitable for sub-ohm devices: high power combined with a strength of 10 or 20 mg/ml would make vaping too strong. For direct-lung vaping, choose 50 ml e-liquids boosted to a low strength instead.
Which nicotine salt strength should you choose?
Choose your strength based on your tobacco consumption and the sensation you are looking for:
| Profile | Consumption | Suggested strength | Throat sensation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Occasional to moderate smoker | Fewer than 10 cigarettes / day | 10 mg/ml | ●○○○ Very smooth |
| Regular to heavy smoker | More than 10 cigarettes / day | 20 mg/ml | ●●○○ Smooth |
These guidelines are indicative: your sensation, device and vaping frequency may lead you to adjust your strength. 20 mg/ml is the maximum strength permitted under European regulations (TPD). For a strength below 10 mg/ml, the traditional nicotine 10 ml format offers more choice. The available strengths for this e-liquid are shown in the product page selector.
Which device for a nicotine salt e-liquid?
Nicotine salts are vaped on low-power devices designed for mouth-to-lung (MTL) inhalation: pods and compact kits with a tight draw. Here are the most suitable device types and a few examples available from Le Vapoteur Discount:
| Equipment | Key features | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| E-cigarettes | Compact kits with MTL clearomisers, low power and long battery life. | Kit Q16 Pro – Justfog Kit Wenax M2 – GeekVape Kit GTX One Pro 40 W – Vaporesso |
| Pods | Tight-draw cartridges, discreet format and no-adjustment operation. | Kit Xros 6 – Vaporesso Kit Ursa Nano 3 – Lost Vape Kit Argus G2 Mini + – Voopoo |
| Clearomisers | Choose MTL models compatible with coils from 0.8 to 1.8 Ω. | Q16 Pro – Justfog GOZ+ – Innokin Go-Z MTL Tank – Innokin |
Recommended settings
The coil value and power determine the type of draw. With a nicotine salt e-liquid, low power is sufficient:
| Coil | Type of draw | Suggested power | Suitable strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.2 to 1.8 Ω | MTL – tight draw, similar to a cigarette | 8 to 15 W | 10 and 20 mg/ml |
| 0.8 to 1.2 Ω | MTL – slightly more open draw | 12 to 20 W | Preferably 10 mg/ml |
Always start at the lower end of the power range stated on the coil, then increase gradually without exceeding 20 W. For the drip tip, a slim 510 mouthpiece concentrates flavours and maintains a tight draw.
