The benefits of flavour concentrates for DIY e-liquid

DIY flavour concentrate gives you the freedom to create your own mixes at good value for money. By mixing your own e-liquid, you can create flavours tailored to your tastes while controlling the nicotine strength.

It’s also a more economical option: a single bottle of flavour concentrate can make several dozen millilitres of e-liquid at a lower cost than ready-to-vape e-liquids.

For discerning vapers, DIY is therefore a cost-effective option.

What you’ll need

To make your own DIY e-liquid, you’ll need:

• A flavour concentrate for DIY e-liquid;
• An unflavoured PG/VG base (with or without nicotine);
• An additive (optional);
• One or more empty bottles to carry your mixes;
• A pipette or graduated bottle;
• Latex gloves and protective eyewear if you’re handling nicotine.

Before handling any ingredients, make sure you’re working on a clean, washed surface out of reach of children and pets.

How much DIY flavour concentrate to use

A flavour concentrate must be diluted in a PG/VG base and cannot be vaped on its own.

Depending on the manufacturer, a DIY flavour concentrate has a different dilution rate, always expressed as a percentage: 4%, 10%, 15%, 20% or 25%.

In practical terms, for our 200 ml DIY Pack with a 50/50 PG/VG ratio, that means:

• 4% of the total volume in a 50/50 PG/VG base = 8 ml of flavour concentrate to add to your 200 ml base
• 10% of the total volume in a 50/50 PG/VG base = 20 ml of flavour concentrate to add to your 200 ml base
• 15% of the total volume in a 50/50 PG/VG base = 30 ml of flavour concentrate to add to your 200 ml base
• 20% of the total volume in a 50/50 PG/VG base = 40 ml of flavour concentrate to add to your 200 ml base
• 25% of the total volume in a 50/50 PG/VG base = 50 ml of flavour concentrate to add to your 200 ml base

In a 70/30 PG/VG base:

If your unflavoured base contains more propylene glycol (which enhances flavour), we recommend reducing the amount of flavour concentrate you use (from 15% to a minimum of 12%).

In a 30/70 PG/VG base:

If your unflavoured base contains more vegetable glycerine (which mutes flavours), we recommend adding a little more flavour concentrate to your mix (increasing it from 15% to 17%).

Steeping

Leave your e-liquid to steep for anywhere from a few days to a few weeks so the flavours can develop fully. Some flavours need longer to steep than others:

• Simple fruit flavours: 0 to 5 days;
• Complex fruit flavours (raspberry, orange, apple, blackberry, watermelon, dragon fruit...): 5 to 7 days;
• Menthol, spiced, vanilla or aniseed flavours: 10 to 15 days;
• Dessert flavours: 15 to 20 days;
• Classic tobacco flavours: around 15 days.

After steeping, try your e-liquid. If necessary, you can adjust the flavour by adding base to tone it down or flavour concentrate to make it stronger.

Storage

To preserve all the qualities of your DIY e-liquid:

• Store it in a dry place, away from light and heat;
• Write the preparation date and ingredients on each bottle;
• Always store your mixes out of reach of children and pets.
