An e-liquid, or e-cigarette liquid, is the product that generates vapour when heated by an e-cigarette coil. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. E-liquid is made up of a base of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine, flavourings and, optionally, nicotine. It determines the taste, throat sensation, cloud production and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four components:

• propylene glycol (PG), which carries flavourings, enhances throat hit and provides a sensation similar to smoking;

An e-liquid containing nicotine is intended for vapers who want to replace traditional cigarettes. Nicotine contributes to a feeling of satisfaction and helps limit cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either at the end of smoking cessation or simply for the pleasure of vaping, although vaping is not recommended if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine strength is essential to avoid a poor experience, such as irritation or cravings. The nicotine strength depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A strength that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a strength that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The aim is to find a balance between throat hit, sensation and vaping comfort, adjusting gradually if necessary. The best known and most effective is 20 mg/ml, which is very suitable for heavy smokers. However, a 10 mg/ml strength may be perfectly suitable for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a bottle of concentrated nicotine designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine strength according to the amount added. Flexible and economical, this solution lets you boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will turn your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerine ratio has a major influence on vaping.

• An e-liquid high in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances throat hit, flavour accuracy and discreet vaping. The e-liquid will be thin and compatible only with tight-draw MTL equipment to prevent leaks.
• An e-liquid high in vegetable glycerine or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and larger clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid is compatible with sub-ohm or shisha-style e-cigarettes, producing large vapour clouds at high power.

The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility of your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use with MTL, RDL and low-power DTL e-cigarette models, at around 15 to 40 watts.

Vegetable-based or Végétol e-liquids replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by some vapers sensitive to PG, and provide a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used for MTL vaping at low power (30 watts minimum) to avoid leaks and preserve product quality.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. To keep your e-liquid for as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, keep it in its original bottle and ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, the e-liquid may take on a slightly brown tint. Safe to use and suitable for vaping, this colour is caused by nicotine oxidation and may also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally recommended not to leave the same e-liquid in your clearomiser or pod cartridge for more than 5 days if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The best-before date is an indicative date. Once an e-liquid has passed this date, it may lose some of its flavour qualities and appearance, including colour and fluidity. An e-liquid leaving the factory will have a best-before date of around 2 years. Even after its best-before date, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
