Choosing the right 100 ml shortfill e-liquid in 30/70 PG/VG

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for electronic cigarettes. The 100 ml format is sold nicotine-free, generally in a 120 ml bottle designed to hold up to two nicotine boosters. It can be vaped as it is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters. For a higher strength, the mixture should be prepared in a large graduated empty bottle. Rich in vegetable glycerine, it is thicker, gentler on the throat and produces dense vapour, for direct or restricted direct lung inhalation on sub-ohm equipment.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: 100 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. With direct lung inhalation, nicotine is felt more strongly than with MTL: with a 30/70 e-liquid, lower strengths are recommended.

The strengths obtained are rounded (exactly 1.8, 3.3, 4.6 and 5.7 mg/ml). The original 120 ml bottle holds a maximum of two boosters: from three boosters onwards, the mixture must be transferred to a large bottle. In DL with coils below 0.4 Ω, a strength above 3 mg/ml quickly becomes irritating: two boosters are generally sufficient. For a nicotine requirement above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you boost a 100 ml e-liquid?

Up to 3 mg/ml, in the original bottle:

Open the bottle: remove the dropper nozzle from the 120 ml bottle (it usually unclips with a fingernail or the supplied nozzle opener).

Pour in the booster(s): add one booster for approximately 2 mg/ml, or two boosters for approximately 3 mg/ml.

Close and shake: replace the nozzle, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to blend the mixture.

Leave to stand for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to write the resulting strength on the bottle.

For approximately 4.5 or 6 mg/ml, in a large graduated bottle:

Transfer the e-liquid: pour all 100 ml into a 250 ml graduated empty bottle.

Add the boosters: three boosters for approximately 4.5 mg/ml (130 ml), four boosters for approximately 6 mg/ml (140 ml). The graduations allow you to check the resulting volume.

Close, shake and leave to stand for a few minutes, then write the resulting strength on the bottle.

The 30/70 PG/VG ratio: dense vapour and a smooth throat feel

An e-liquid is made up of a propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) base, flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries the flavours and throat hit, while VG provides roundness and vapour volume. With 70% VG, this ratio favours dense vapour and a smooth throat sensation.

More viscous, a 30/70 e-liquid requires coils with wide e-liquid inlets. In a pod or MTL tank, it does not saturate the cotton effectively and may cause dry hits (a burnt taste).

The coil resistance and power determine the draw type. With a 30/70 e-liquid, higher power is needed to vaporise VG effectively:

Always follow the power range stated on the coil and start at the bottom of that range. For the drip tip, a wide 810 mouthpiece makes direct lung inhalation and the flow of a large volume of vapour easier.

Looking after your electronic cigarette

Prime every new coil: being thicker, 30/70 takes longer to saturate the cotton. Put a few drops on the coil, fill the tank, then wait 10 minutes before first use.

Increase power gradually on a new coil to avoid dry hits and preserve the cotton.

Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases: VG clogs coils more quickly (on average every 1 to 2 weeks, depending on use). Take the opportunity to thoroughly clean the tank and drip tip.

Close the bottle properly after every refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.
