What is an electronic cigarette? While the first cigarette, made of tobacco and harmful products that we know all too well today, was created in the 19th century, at the beginning of 1843 according to historical records, the e-cigarette only entered modern society in 2003. More than 17 years ago, a certain Hon Lik, a former Chinese pharmacist who was also an engineer, tested an “electronic atomising smokeless cigarette”, for which he filed a patent as early as 2005. The electronic cigarette only appeared in France 5 years later, in 2010.
To date, more than 700,000 tobacco users have been able to overcome their dependence on conventional cigarettes by switching to daily e-cigarette use. This makes France the third-largest global market in terms of turnover generated by businesses in the electronic cigarette sector. Used by some as a genuine smoking cessation aid, the e-cigarette is a real pleasure for others, who naturally turn to this type of nicotine consumption (or nicotine-free, depending on their needs), offering greater versatility and more flavours than traditional cigarettes.
Composition
What is an electronic cigarette made of? Each e-cigarette consists of:
- A battery: used to power the device so that it can heat the e-liquid and produce the vapour needed for vaping.
- A clearomiser: consisting of the tank containing the e-liquid and the system that enables vaporisation
Depending on the models chosen, electronic cigarettes can feature additional options to optimise the vaping experience. However, all existing e-cigarettes consist of the basic equipment mentioned above.

Understanding the different formats
Electronic cigarettes come in different formats, which may be more or less appealing depending on their intended use and the preferred ergonomics.
- The “POD” format: also known as a “POD Mod”, the POD-type electronic cigarette is fairly recent on the vaping market. Small, lightweight and compact, this type of e-cigarette owes its format to its low-to-medium-capacity battery and coil. PODs are therefore mainly used with e-liquids such as nicotine salts or CBD, or products with a relatively high nicotine level and a relatively low vegetable glycerine (VG) level. PODs are highly appreciated for taking up very little space and their discreet appearance. - The “tube” format: as its name suggests, the tube-format electronic cigarette has a tubular design. Compact, lightweight and therefore rather discreet, the tube is adaptable: the clearomiser it is fitted with may be removable or fixed, depending on the model. Tube electronic cigarettes are often available as kits. Equipped with smart systems, tube-format e-cigarettes tend to automatically recognise the clearomisers they are used with, in order to adjust the power according to the product.
- The “box” format: the third and final main category of electronic cigarette, the box is generally aimed at hobbyist and/or experienced vapers rather than beginners. Its larger, bulkier format makes it possible to choose specialised equipment with more advanced features. This format is named after the rectangular shape that defines its design, like a box. Equipped with a high-capacity battery, the box comes with rechargeable batteries — more commonly known as “accus” — as well as a clearomiser.
Determining your consumption
Before embarking on this journey, you need to establish your own smoker profile. To do so, you need to determine which category your conventional tobacco consumption falls into:
- I am a “light” smoker: if I smoke fewer than 10 cigarettes/day.
- I am a “moderate” smoker: if I smoke between 10 and 20 cigarettes/day.
- I am a “heavy” smoker: if I smoke more than 20 cigarettes/day.
In this case, several options are available to you, depending on your smoker profile. Your consumption will highlight certain decisive criteria, such as the quality of the equipment, how easy the product is to use, tank capacity, nicotine delivery rate, battery life, etc.
- For “light” smokers:
You enjoy the occasional cigarette at a party, after a meal or simply for pleasure one afternoon… You are therefore one of those “light” smokers with little need for tobacco. Defining your needs precisely

1- Vapour
Is it the huge clouds of vapour that fascinate you in the world of the electronic cigarette? You too can enjoy this pleasure if that is what you are looking for. However, there are a few things you should know before getting started:
- Nicotine delivery: abundant vapour delivers far more nicotine than less intense vapour. By creating a cloud of vapour with increased nicotine delivery, you risk throat irritation. Is that really the effect you want? It is a question worth considering seriously.
- Direct inhalation: moreover, for those who use little or no nicotine in their e-cigarette, another detail should be considered: abundant vapour can only be produced if your e-cigarette allows you to use the technique known as direct inhalation. In this case, the vapour is sent directly to the lungs, without first passing through your mouth. Does this really suit your preferences? Does it meet your needs?
- The required equipment: third and final point: producing large quantities of vapour requires special equipment. To practise this, you will often need a high-performance box-type device, fitted with specific low-resistance coils.
2- Battery life
Battery life is obviously one of the key factors to consider, since it determines the average number of puffs you can take each day, but also, and above all, the type of vaping you can enjoy depending on your profile. In summary:
- For “light” smokers: a battery with relatively low to medium battery life will be perfectly sufficient. You are therefore advised to choose a battery below 1,500 mAh.
- For “moderate” smokers: as inhalations are more regular and the vaping experience more demanding, you will need a battery with medium, or even high, battery life in some cases. An e-cigarette battery between 1,500 and 2,500 mAh would therefore be ideal.
- For “heavy” smokers: ideally, choose batteries with a capacity greater than 2,500 mAh.
If you do not choose an e-cigarette with an integrated battery — an electronic cigarette equipped with an “All-in-one”, or “all-in-one”, system — you can certainly opt for a box with rechargeable batteries to insert inside. 3- The coil
A central component of the electronic cigarette, the coil is essential to the proper operation of the system, as it heats the e-liquid using the energy it receives from the battery, ultimately releasing flavourful vapour. This consumable is located in the clearomiser and is measured in ohms. To determine which coil to choose, first consider what type of vapour you want your electronic cigarette to produce:
- For a fairly light vape that the vaper wishes to enjoy with direct inhalation, meaning inhaling directly from the e-cigarette into the lungs: a coil with a value above 1 Ohm would be the most suitable.
- For vapour production with both direct and indirect inhalation, neither too intense nor too mild: opt for a coil with a value between 0.5 and 1 ohm.
- For an intense vape achieved with direct inhalation: choose a low-resistance coil, below 0.5 ohm.
4- The tank
Depending on your vaper profile, you can determine whether your e-liquid tank needs to be large, small or even medium-sized. The more puffs you take, the larger the tank capacity you will need for better battery life. Generally speaking, medium-sized clearomisers offer tank capacities often between 2 and 3 millilitres. For a heavy smoker, it will certainly be necessary to choose a larger tank.
5- Nicotine strength
The nicotine strength in your e-liquid determines which model you should choose. As an electronic cigarette does not deliver nicotine in the same way as a conventional cigarette, it is essential to establish your nicotine requirements beforehand.
- The coil: depending on the nicotine delivery level you want, the value of the coil you choose will be decisive. A coil above 1 Ohm produces less abundant, lighter vapour. It is recommended for those who do not want excessive nicotine delivery. Conversely, if the coil has a low value (below 1 Ohm), it will not only draw more power from the battery and reduce the e-cigarette's battery life, but it will also produce intense, plentiful vapour. The larger the cloud, the greater the nicotine delivery.
- The type of vape: you need to choose between direct and/or indirect inhalation, bearing in mind that some box mods offer versatility by providing both options in one device. The effect will not be the same whether the nicotine in the vapour produced is delivered directly from the e-cigarette to the lungs, or whether you allow it to linger in the mouth before fully inhaling.
