Choosing the right 50 ml shortfill e-liquid

An e-liquid is a consumable intended exclusively for e-cigarettes. The 50 ml format is sold nicotine-free, in a bottle designed to hold up to two boosters. It can be vaped as it is at 0 mg/ml or topped up with one or two nicotine boosters to obtain around 3 or 6 mg/ml. This large format is ideal for vapers who have found their everyday flavour.

Nicotine-free or boosted: which strength should you choose?

Adding a booster is optional: 50 ml e-liquid can be vaped perfectly well without nicotine. If you want nicotine, the number of boosters added determines the final strength:

Boosters added (10 ml at 20 mg/ml)Final volumeStrength obtainedProfile
None50 ml0 mg/mlNicotine-free vaping, flavour enjoyment
1 booster60 ml≈ 3 mg/mlOccasional smoker
2 boosters70 ml≈ 6 mg/mlModerate smoker

The strengths obtained are rounded (exactly 3.3 and 5.7 mg/ml). For nicotine requirements above 6 mg/ml, the 10 ml format or nicotine salts are more suitable.

How do you boost a 50 ml e-liquid?

1
Open the bottle: remove the dropper nozzle from the 50 ml bottle (it can generally be unclipped with a fingernail or the nozzle remover supplied).
2
Pour in the booster(s): add one booster for around 3 mg/ml, or two boosters for around 6 mg/ml.
3
Close and shake: replace the nozzle, screw the cap back on and shake vigorously for around thirty seconds to blend the mixture evenly.
4
Leave to rest for a few minutes before filling your tank. Remember to note the resulting strength on the bottle.

For a higher strength or a customised recipe, use a larger empty bottle, available in DIY accessories.

Which nicotine booster should you choose?

Le Vapoteur Discount boosters come in 10 ml bottles (the dosage is shown on each product page). The nicotine type and base alter the throat sensation:

The 50/50 PG/VG ratio: a versatile balance

An e-liquid consists of a propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) base, flavourings and, where applicable, nicotine. PG carries flavour and throat hit, while VG adds smoothness and vapour volume. In equal proportions, the 50/50 ratio combines both properties.

Thanks to its fluidity, a 50/50 e-liquid properly saturates the coils of most tanks and pods, without being too thin for tight-draw models.

What equipment for a 50/50 e-liquid?

50/50 is compatible with the vast majority of e-cigarettes. Here are the most suitable equipment types and a few examples available from Le Vapoteur Discount:

Equipment Key points Examples

GOZ+ – Innokin
Z Nano 3 – GeekVape

Recommended settings

The coil resistance and power determine the draw type. With a 50 ml 50/50 e-liquid vaped at 0, 3 or 6 mg/ml, the following guidelines provide stable vaping:

CoilDraw typeIndicative power
1.0 to 1.2 ΩMTL – tight draw, similar to a cigarette10 to 18 W
0.6 to 0.9 ΩMTL to RDL – medium draw15 to 25 W
0.4 to 0.5 ΩRDL – semi-airy draw25 to 40 W

Always start at the lower end of the power range stated on the coil, then increase gradually. For the drip tip, a 510 tip suits most uses; an 810 drip tip can be used for RDL with tanks designed for this format.

Maintaining your e-cigarette

1
Prime every new coil: apply a few drops of e-liquid to the cotton, fill the tank, then wait 5 to 10 minutes before first use.
2
Clean regularly the tank or cartridge and the drip tip to prevent residue build-up.
3
Replace the coil as soon as flavours deteriorate or vapour decreases (on average every 1 to 3 weeks depending on use), and take the opportunity to clean the tank completely.
4
Close the bottle securely after every refill and store it upright: a large format is used over several weeks.

Usage and storage precautions

  • If you do not smoke, do not vape.
  • Product prohibited for minors. E-liquid sold without nicotine: once a booster has been added, it contains nicotine and is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people with cardiovascular disorders or hypertension.
  • Handle nicotine boosters with care; in the event of skin contact, rinse thoroughly with soap and water.
  • In the event of an allergy, check for possible allergens (limonene, linalool, etc.) listed on the label.
  • Keep your e-liquids closed, in a dry place away from light and temperature variations, and out of the reach of children and animals.

Remember to recycle: empty bottles should be taken to suitable collection points.

FAQ

An e-liquid (or electronic cigarette liquid) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, throat hit, cloud production, and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four elements:
  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavours, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette ;
  • vegetable glycerin (VG), responsible for the vapour and the density of the cloud ;
  • flavourings, which give the taste (fruit, mint, classic blonde, indulgent, ice…) ;
  • nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting.
Some formulas also use alternative plant-based bases (Végétol) for extra smoothness.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who want to replace traditional cigarettes. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and limits cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either at the end of a quitting process, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, although it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a bad experience (throat irritation or cravings). The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. A level that is too low can lead to frustration and relapse, while a level that is too high can cause throat discomfort. The goal is to find a balance between throat hit, sensation and vaping comfort, adjusting gradually as needed. A low dosage of 0, 3 or 6 mg/ml nicotine is generally recommended for light or occasional smokers (fewer than 7 cigarettes per day), and a high dosage of 20 mg/ml nicotine salt for heavy smokers (1 packet of cigarettes or more). However, this dosage can be adjusted depending on your e-cigarette and your vaping style.

Nicotine salt is a more stable and smoother form of nicotine to inhale. It provides rapid absorption, with a less harsh throat hit, even at high levels. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suited to beginner vapers, former heavy smokers, and low-wattage MTL kits. There are different nicotine salt strengths. The most well-known and effective being 20 mg/ml, highly suitable for heavy smokers. However, a 10 mg/ml strength may be perfectly adequate for a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a nicotine-concentrated bottle designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It allows you to adjust the final nicotine level depending on the quantity added. Flexible and cost-effective, this solution lets you boost your large-format e-liquid to 3 or 6 mg/ml of nicotine. For a 50 ml e-liquid, adding one nicotine booster will give you 3 mg/ml, while two nicotine boosters will transform your e-liquid into 6 mg/ml.

The propylene glycol / vegetable glycerin ratio strongly influences the vaping experience.
  • An e-liquid rich in propylene glycol or PG (70/30, 80/20) enhances the throat hit, flavour precision and a discreet vape. The e-liquid will be thin and compatible only with MTL equipment with a tight draw to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid rich in vegetable glycerin or VG (30/70) produces more vapour and clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid will be compatible with sub-ohm or shisha-type e-cigarettes, producing large vapour clouds at high power.
The choice therefore depends on the power and compatibility with your e-cigarette. If in doubt, the most common ratio remains 50/50 PG/VG. Balanced, it allows versatile use on MTL, RDL and light DTL e-cigarette models (between approximately 15 and 40 watts).

E-liquids with a vegetable base or Végétol replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used in MTL with a low wattage (minimum 30 watts) to avoid the risk of leaks and preserve the quality of the product.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally do not contain nicotine. They offer a different sensation, focused on relaxation, without any addictive effect. They should be used at moderate wattage to preserve the quality of the product. A MTL electronic cigarette with a tight draw is recommended.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. They are formulated from ingredients certified as safe for health, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances found in traditional cigarettes. Nevertheless, to choose a safe e-liquid, a few precautions should be taken, such as purchasing your e-liquid from a recognised retailer like Le Vapoteur Discount, or checking the composition and origin by favouring reputable and regulated brands.

An e-liquid manufactured in France meets strict requirements and European directives regarding traceability, control, and safety. As a guarantee of quality and transparency for the consumer, French and European brands generally have their own laboratory for developing their e-liquid formula and are required to have this formulation studied by an independent laboratory before going to market. All these steps ensure that e-liquids are safe for vapers. These French and European quality standards prohibit undesirable substances and provide a more secure framework for vaping.

To keep your e-liquid as long as possible and preserve its quality, taste and colour, you should keep it in its original bottle and ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, the e-liquid may take on a slightly brown tint. Safe and suitable for consumption, this colour is due to the oxidation of nicotine and may also depend on the flavouring used in the e-liquid. It is generally recommended not to keep the same e-liquid for more than 5 days in your clearomiser or pod cartridge if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid fresh from the factory will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past its BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
