Le Vapoteur Discount’s guide to choosing your 10 ml e-liquid

Essential to every e-cigarette, e-liquid is at the heart of your vaping experience. Under European regulations, the 10 ml format is currently the only one permitted to contain nicotine. Compact, practical and easy to carry, it lets you try a flavour, adjust your nicotine strength or simply vape every day.
It’s also an ideal format to support you as you cut down or quit smoking at your own pace.

What nicotine strength should you choose for your e-liquid?

The right nicotine strength depends primarily on your smoking habits and how much you smoke. The aim is to satisfy nicotine cravings without discomfort while keeping your vape enjoyable.

  • Light smoker (fewer than 5 cigarettes a day)
    0 to 6 mg/ml
    A mild nicotine strength, enough to ease the urge to smoke while providing a gentle throat hit.

  • Moderate smoker (5 to 15 cigarettes a day)
    6 to 12 mg/ml
    An ideal balance for a sensation close to smoking a conventional cigarette, without frustration.

  • Heavy smoker (more than 15 cigarettes a day)
    12 to 18 mg/ml
    A higher nicotine strength designed to meet a substantial nicotine need, particularly when you first start quitting smoking.

  • Very heavy smoker (more than 20 cigarettes a day)
    18 to 20 mg/ml
    The maximum permitted strength, often paired with nicotine salts for faster nicotine absorption and a smoother sensation.

These are guidelines: every vaper is different. How it feels to you, the throat hit and the device you use may lead you to adjust your nicotine strength.

Choosing a device for an e-liquid with a balanced PG/VG ratio (50/50)

The 50/50 PG/VG ratio is one of the most versatile on the market. It offers an excellent balance of flavour delivery, a moderate throat hit and reasonable vapour production. It’s a dependable choice for beginners and for anyone looking for a simple, effective everyday vape.

E-cigarette

Thanks to its balanced viscosity, a 50/50 e-liquid is compatible with most versatile e-cigarettes, including:

Pods

This ratio also works very well with modern pods, valued for their simplicity and discreet size:

Clearomisers

For a consistent, hassle-free vape, choose versatile clearomisers that can accommodate different inhalation styles:

Coils

The coil resistance should ideally be between 0.4 ohms and 1.2 ohms for a flexible, economical and enjoyable vape.

Drip tip

A standard 510 drip tip is generally recommended. Some vapers also use this ratio with airier 810 drip tips without experiencing leaks, depending on their device.

Power adjustment

A 50/50 PG/VG e-liquid works across a wide power range, generally between 10 and 40 watts, depending on the coil fitted and the draw you prefer.

How to maintain your e-cigarette

Regular maintenance is essential for a clean, flavourful vape and a long-lasting device:

  • Clean the clearomiser and drip tip regularly to prevent residue building up;
  • Replace the coil as soon as the flavour changes or vapour production drops (every 2 to 3 weeks on average), and take the opportunity to clean your clearomiser thoroughly;
  • Avoid leaving a tank filled with the same e-liquid unused for more than 5 days to reduce the risk of leaks or changes to the flavour.

Precautions for use

  • If you don’t smoke, don’t vape;
  • Product containing nicotine: not for sale to minors; not recommended for pregnant women or people with cardiovascular conditions or high blood pressure;
  • If you have allergies, check the label for any listed allergens (limonene, nuts, etc.);
  • If it comes into contact with skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water;
  • Store your e-liquids in a dry place, away from light and temperature fluctuations, and out of reach of children and pets.

Remember to recycle: dispose of empty bottles through the appropriate recycling channels.

FAQ

An e-liquid (or e-cigarette liquid) is the product that generates vapour when heated by an e-cigarette’s coil. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. E-liquid contains a base of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine, flavourings and, optionally, nicotine. It determines the flavour, throat sensation, cloud production and overall vaping experience.

An e-liquid generally contains four ingredients:

  • propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavourings, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation similar to smoking a cigarette;
  • vegetable glycerine (VG), which produces vapour and gives the cloud its density;
  • flavourings, which provide the flavour (fruit, mint, classic tobacco, dessert, ice…);
  • nicotine, an optional ingredient that helps vapers manage cravings while quitting smoking.

Some formulas also use alternative plant-based bases (Végétol) for a smoother vape.

An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who want to replace conventional cigarettes. Nicotine helps provide a feeling of satisfaction and reduces cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either towards the end of quitting or simply for the enjoyment of vaping, although vaping is not recommended if you do not smoke. Choosing the right nicotine strength is essential to avoid an unpleasant experience, such as irritation or cravings. The strength you need depends on how many cigarettes you used to smoke. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. Too little nicotine can lead to frustration and relapse, while too much can cause throat discomfort. The aim is to find a balance between throat hit, sensation and vaping comfort, adjusting the strength gradually if necessary. We generally recommend a low strength of 0, 3 or 6 mg/ml for light or occasional smokers (fewer than seven cigarettes a day), and a high strength of 20 mg/ml nicotine salt for heavy smokers (a pack a day or more). However, you can adjust this strength to suit your e-cigarette and how you vape.

Nicotine salt is a more stable form of nicotine that feels smoother when inhaled. It is absorbed quickly and delivers a gentler throat hit, even at high strengths. Nicotine salt e-liquids are particularly suitable for new vapers, former heavy smokers and low-powered MTL kits. They come in different strengths. The best-known and most effective is 20 mg/ml, which is particularly suitable for heavy smokers. But 10 mg/ml may also suit a regular or occasional smoker.

A nicotine booster is a small bottle of concentrated nicotine designed to be added to a large-format e-liquid. It lets you adjust the final nicotine strength according to how much you add. This flexible, economical option lets you bring your large-format e-liquid to a nicotine strength of 3 or 6 mg/ml. Adding one nicotine booster to a 50 ml e-liquid gives you 3 mg/ml; two boosters bring it to 6 mg/ml.

The ratio of propylene glycol to vegetable glycerine has a major effect on the vaping experience.

  • An e-liquid high in propylene glycol, or PG (70/30, 80/20), delivers a stronger throat hit, clearer flavours and a discreet vape. This thinner e-liquid should only be used with tight-draw MTL devices to avoid leaks.
  • An e-liquid high in vegetable glycerine, or VG (30/70), produces more vapour and bigger clouds, with a smoother, sweeter sensation. This thicker e-liquid is suitable for sub-ohm or shisha-style e-cigarettes that produce large clouds of vapour at high power.

The choice therefore depends on your e-cigarette’s power and compatibility. If in doubt, the most common ratio is 50/50 PG/VG. This balanced blend works with a range of MTL, RDL and lower-powered DTL e-cigarettes (approximately 15 to 40 watts).

Plant-based or Végétol e-liquids replace traditional propylene glycol. They are often gentler on the throat, better tolerated by some vapers who are sensitive to PG, and offer a smoother vape without compromising on flavour. However, they should be used for MTL vaping at low power (a minimum of 30 watts) to avoid leaks and preserve product quality.

Yes, CBD e-liquids are designed for vaping and generally contain no nicotine. They offer a different experience focused on relaxation, without an addictive effect. They should be used at moderate power to preserve product quality. Choose a tight-draw MTL e-cigarette for them.

E-liquids are considered a much healthier alternative to smoked tobacco. They are made from ingredients certified as safe for health, unlike the 7,000 harmful substances in traditional cigarettes. Nevertheless, to choose a safe e-liquid, you should take a few precautions: buy from a reputable retailer such as Le Vapoteur Discount, and check the ingredients and origin, favouring well-known, regulated brands.

An e-liquid made in France meets strict requirements and European directives on traceability, testing and safety. As a mark of quality and transparency for consumers, French and European brands generally have their own laboratories to develop their e-liquid formulas and are required to have those formulas assessed by an independent laboratory before bringing them to market. These steps help ensure that e-liquids are safe for vapers. French and European quality standards prohibit undesirable substances and provide a safer framework for vaping.

To keep your e-liquid for as long as possible and preserve its quality, flavour and colour, store it in its original bottle, ideally away from light, heat and air. Despite these precautions, the e-liquid may turn slightly brown. This colour change is harmless and the liquid remains suitable for use; it is caused by nicotine oxidation and may also depend on the flavouring used. We generally recommend not leaving the same e-liquid in your clearomiser or pod cartridge for more than five days if you are not using it, to avoid leaks and excessive oxidation.

The best-before date (known in French as DLUO or DDM) is a guide. Once an e-liquid has passed this date, it may lose some of its flavour and its appearance may change (colour or consistency). An e-liquid leaving the factory will have a best-before period of around two years. Even after this date, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
