An e-liquid (or electronic cigarette liquid) is the product that generates vapour when heated by the coil of an electronic cigarette. Unlike traditional cigarettes, there is no combustion. The e-liquid is composed of a base (propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine), flavourings, and optionally nicotine. It determines the taste, the throat hit, the cloud production, and the overall vaping experience.
An e-liquid generally contains four ingredients:
- propylene glycol (PG), which carries the flavours, enhances the throat hit and provides a sensation close to that of a cigarette;
- vegetable glycerin (VG), responsible for the vapour and the density of the cloud;
- flavourings, which provide the taste (fruit, mint, classic tobacco, dessert, ice…);
- nicotine, optional, which helps manage cravings for vapers who are quitting smoking.
An e-liquid with nicotine is intended for vapers who want to replace traditional cigarettes. Nicotine acts on the feeling of satisfaction and limits cravings. Nicotine-free e-liquids are used either at the end of a quit-smoking process, or purely for the pleasure of vaping, even though it is not recommended to vape if you are not a smoker. Choosing the right nicotine level is essential to avoid a bad experience (throat irritation or cravings).
The nicotine dosage depends on your previous cigarette consumption. A light smoker will not have the same needs as a heavy smoker. The DLUO (Date Limite d'Utilisation Optimale) or BBD (Best Before Date) is an indicative date. Once the e-liquid's date has passed, it may lose its taste qualities and appearance (colour, fluidity). An e-liquid straight from the factory will have a BBD of approximately 2 years. Even past the BBD, the e-liquid remains suitable for vaping and will not be harmful to health.
