Presence of alcohol in certain e-liquids, for what reasons?

Although this is not always the case, e-liquids may contain a small proportion of alcohol; by which we mean: ethanol, or ethyl alcohol. This alcohol is primarily used to thin out liquids, which can have a viscous consistency. Furthermore, it also acts as a flavor enhancer by releasing the aromas, as well as a natural preservative and antibacterial agent.

On the other hand, alcohol is used to dissolve residues of essential and vegetable oils; a process essential to the manufacturing of food flavorings. Conversely, other carriers such as water, sugar or essential oils do not allow the dissolution of certain aromatic molecules and can even produce toxic molecules for the body.

Is it risky?

In order to comply with the CLP (Classification and Labelling of Chemical Products) regulation in force in European countries, e-liquid manufacturers are required not to market products whose ethanol content exceeds 6%. In practice, ethanol is present in such a small quantity in e-liquids (between 1 and 5% depending on the flavorings used) that it poses no health risk whatsoever. Moreover, given that e-liquid is inhaled and not ingested, it does not pass through the digestive tract: it is therefore impossible to experience any physical effect related to alcohol, nor any dependency.

Can you test positive on a breathalyzer?

As we explain in the previous section, the amount of alcohol present in e-liquids is far too low to have any effect on the body. Therefore, you can get behind the wheel without worrying about testing positive for alcohol, as a breathalyzer will not be able to detect the slightest trace.

E-liquids with alcoholic flavors, such as Mojito, Pastis or Rum, do not contain alcohol as such, but only flavorings that replicate the taste of your favorite spirits!

E-liquids with alcohol

Manufacturers of e-liquids are required to indicate the presence of alcohol on the labeling of their e-liquids, whenever it exceeds 1%. However, they are not required to comply with this obligation below this threshold; unless their products are certified by an AFNOR standard. In that case and in order to find out whether an e-liquid contains alcohol or not, you can contact the manufacturer who must be able to provide you with the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for the product in question. Certain brands such as Roykin or Alphaliquid are known for offering alcohol-based e-liquids.

Alcohol-free e-liquids

If for reasons of religious beliefs or for any other reason you do not wish to consume alcohol-based products, you can turn to the range of alcohol-free e-liquids; offered by brands such as Flavour Power, D'Lice or Alfa Siempre
