How to avoid leaks with my e-cigarette?
A question that comes up relatively often when you are an e-cigarette enthusiast, especially during periods of intense heat.
A question that comes up relatively often when you are an e-cigarette enthusiast, especially during periods of intense heat.
Indeed, sometimes it can leak, but be careful — if it is constant and the liquid loss is significant, it is likely that you are experiencing a problem with your equipment. So, let's go ahead and check this together.
Why this question? Simply to see what kind of draw you have on your e-cigarette. Direct lung or mouth-to-lung? Meaning an open or restricted draw? A lot of vapor or little vapor? Large device or small device? All these questions are aimed at identifying your vaper profile and what draw you use on your device. At the same time, we will check the value of the coil you have inside your tank, the nicotine level you use, the opacity of the e-liquid you use, the charge and the lifespan of your coil.
Why ask about the nicotine level? It will influence the way you draw on your device and give us an indication of the power you have. If you have a high nicotine level, you will generally have the profile of a vaper using an e-cigarette with a mouth-to-lung draw, meaning a tight draw with a small coil. If you have almost no nicotine, you will want to compensate for the throat hit sensation; you will be on a direct lung draw model and your inhalation will be direct. It is important to draw correctly on your device to avoid leaking or liquid coming back up issues. If you do not draw correctly, your liquid will not heat up and therefore will not turn into vapor; when you inhale on the device you will then experience leaks or liquid coming back up.
It can happen that the value of your coil does not suit you and that your liquid leaks because you cannot inhale correctly on the device or because you are not correctly adjusting your power according to your coils. The coil is placed inside your tank; depending on the model, there are several coil variants that fit it, each offering a different intensity and power so that you can adapt the power that suits you to the same model from a wide range of values. For example, if your coil indicates a range between 20 and 25 watts, and you set your power to 15 watts because that draw suits you better, that is not the right solution. You need to change your coil and take a variant that will also fit your device, but whose range includes 15 watts. This way your draw will be much better suited to your needs on the one hand, and on the other hand you will not have leaks caused by improper heating of the liquid.
All e-cigarette e-liquids are made using two substances that form the base: on one hand we have propylene glycol, which is a substance that liquefies your liquid, and on the other hand we have vegetable glycerin, which is a more viscous and compact substance. If you want your liquid to turn into vapor, you need to adapt the PG/VG ratio according to the coil you have as well as your draw style. When using coils with a low wattage range, you should prefer liquids with propylene glycol, which are more suited to low-temperature heating. Conversely, when you have a large coil and high power, you should prefer vegetable glycerin, which is better suited to high-temperature heating. This way you will limit leaks caused by the liquid not being adapted to your vaping power and not heating at the right intensity.
On e-cigarettes, you have two types of battery models: the integrated battery and the battery with cells (accus). On models with accus, when your battery runs low you simply need to change the cells and you will regain good power to heat the liquid correctly. On the other hand, on models with integrated batteries, when you experience battery drain — especially if you are using a large coil and good power — you will clearly notice that with a drop in battery your liquid will no longer heat as well as before and you will tend to experience liquid coming back up to your mouth. So there can be leaks when your battery is not sufficiently charged, as it no longer allows the liquid to heat correctly at the right power, meaning the liquid does not turn into vapor and you can experience leaks or liquid coming back up.
What is a coil? It is a cotton wrapped in an alloy that acts as a filter for your e-cigarette. When you vape on your device, the power heats the liquid which, in contact with the cotton, turns into vapor. If the coil is too worn out, it will no longer play its role as a filter and consequently the liquid will not turn into vapor and will leak. So pay attention to the lifespan of your coil.
We finish with a few basic tips. Do not leave your e-cigarette near a source of humidity or heat. Do not tilt the e-cigarette; when you store it, make sure to turn it off properly so that nothing presses the switch button if you are not vaping, otherwise your liquid will leak and it could even burn out the coil.
